MEC Project - Mobile Emergency Call for smartphones
Every year, there are millions of traffic accidents around the world that require medical assistance. Between 60 and 70% of deceased died between the first and the second hour after the accident, the "golden hour" for the emergency services. A good and quick medical assistance in that hour could save more than 2.500 lives only in Europe and reduce injuries between 10 and 15%.
There is a project, that was born within the European Commission, that pretends all new car bearing a system called e-call. The goal of this system is to send an automatic alarm if the vehicle has suffered an accident. However, this is a very huge project, and that means it is very difficult to achieve an agreement between all involved parties.
That was the motivation for the MEC application: An innovative application that has been designed to detect traffic crash and automatically send emergency call by email, SMS and conventional voice call with automatic locution.
This application doesn't pretend to be competitor of e-call, but to demonstrate that an smartphone can detect a traffic crash and then send SOS alarms. Additionally, it is a mobile application, so it doesn't need to be installed in the vehicle. Moreover, it can be used not only in 4 wheel vehicles, but also in motorcycles and bikes.
